The hollow metal frame in this photo is fire rated for 3 hours. The channel for the ceiling has been screwed onto the frame face at the head. NFPA 80 requires all of the components of a fire door assembly to be rated for that use, and things like signs and moldings have to be attached with tape or adhesive - not screws. I don't know of anything that specifically addresses attaching the ceiling to the rated frame...what can be used to show the contractor that this is not acceptable?

Was there any type of [ approved 3 hr. type ] door assembly drawings

submitted for approval on this project ?........If so, those drawings

should have language for the specific type of assembly [ i.e. - U.L.,

...USGA, ...Factory Mutual ].....Someone will need to research the

language of the approved plans indicating that screws or other

types of fasteners are not part of the tested assembly.

If possible, ...place the burden of approval on the contractor to

prove that the screws ARE allowed, otherwise remove them per

the approved assembly listing.

Same idea cannot just put screws anywhere you want in the frame, would say voids the listing.

Has not been tested that way

Ask the manufacture for an opinion?

How tall is the door?

Sounds like what you say out of 80 covers it

Architect needs to respond to this RFI.

They should be able to show that this is incorrect per their drawings and/or specs

Is it a tall door or a low ceiling?
I am thinking tall door compared to the opening to the right

It has to be similar to a door normally you cannot modify a door without voiding the listing

From FM

UL must have similar language

Authorization must be obtained from FM Approvals before a revision or substitution of any component is allowed in an Approved fire door and frame assembly.

4.2.2 Written installation instructions for each fire door frame shall be submitted for review. The installation instructions shall provide clear guidance on the number, type, location and use of anchors used to secure the frame to the wall. These written instructions shall be provided with each unit when shipped from the manufacturer’s facility.

C. All cutouts and modifications to the door panel shall be made at the manufacturer’s facilities, or at authorized modifying distributors that are under FM Approvals Facilities and Procedures Audit program.

4.8.3 Approval of swinging composite, hollow metal, metal clad, flush sheet metal, and wood core door assemblies is granted based upon test results that utilize a specific combination of builders hardware. Other builders hardware may be used provided that it is compatible to the door design and its fire protection rating. Latch throws and the size and quantity of hinges shall, at a minimum, be as was fire tested. For guidelines in the use of alternate builders hardware, see Appendix E.

All this is from 1988::

Maybe have them supply specs that

1. Those are three hour rated screws

2. The penetrations made by the screws are fire stopped per three hour rating
