Builders don’t sweat the state’s green building code changes

Been there, done that.

That’s what many Silicon Valley builders are saying as a new state building code takes effect mandating strict sustainability guidelines.

California’s first-in-the-nation green building code, dubbed CalGreen, became law on Jan. 1. From now on, most new residential and commercial construction projects must comply with requirements affecting everything from plumbing to paint (see sidebar).

In the short term, some fallout — including modestly higher costs and longer waits for approval — is expected. But industry leaders said they don’t expect major headaches because the region already has a lot of experience building efficiently.

Steve Murphy, here at Orchard Elementary School, leads green construction for Blach Construction. He estimates green building can cost 5 percent more than traditional projects.
