Today I am dealing with a poor, elderly couple that is stuck with the aftermath of a house fire. They are confused, forgetful, and have no clue how to navigate the regulatory system.

Tomorrow I am giving 24hr notice to inspect an illegal suite that is being used as a hub for drug dealing and stolen goods. Police will be on standby to help out if needed.

Not all code interpretation and paperwork...

I asked for an escort from police one day because we knew the guy was problematic. I met the police at the end of the road and after telling the officers who we were serving an order on, they called to have backup on standby up the road. The guy had just gotten out of prison for stabbing someone.

I served the guy the order, explained his options to him (including what would happen if he didn't comply) and he was as good as gold.

As you climb the ladder in this industry, you don't deal with fewer of these situations, you deal with more. I no longer get to deal with the "good" contractors. I only get involved when there are major issues now.

Today, I am doing Dangerous and Unsightly on two properties. DAUP is never fun - if I'm involved, it is invariably a blend of four factors
  • Poverty
  • Drug use
  • tragedy
  • mental health
the only question is the ratio of each key ingredient.

I'm also doing a pair of zoning enforcements, one potentially telling a very unfriendly soul that they can't keep chickens where they may be keeping chickens
and the other telling someone that no, they can't keep a goat in the back yard of a municipal property.

And y'all gotta be ... careful. I had an illegal rooster enforcement matter where the rooster was taken care of. With a shotgun. Inside municipal boundaries.

I wasn't there when Roo became Stew, thankfully.

I called the Sheriff a few times. Two would arrive. They were not the summons serving variety if ya know what I mean. There was just something menacing about them...pit bulls would cower around them. They each held a flashlight like they were looking for pumpkins to smash.

Maybe the craziest situation I have seen so far was an extreme hoarding scenario, garbage piled through the entire 2 story unit to waist height, with a huge rottweiler that was depositing 3lb poops throughout the house at will. Did not run into that in my code training.

ICE, still waiting for your book of anecdotes....
