Exceptions:

2. Combustible materials exposed within plenums complying with Section 602 of the International Mechanical Code.

3. Class A interior finish materials classified in accordance with Section 803.

4. Combustible piping within partitions or shaft enclosures installed in accordance with the provisions of this code.

5. Combustible piping within concealed ceiling spaces installed in accordance with the International Mechanical Code and the International Plumbing Code.

6. Combustible insulation and covering on pipe and tubing, installed in concealed spaces other than plenums, complying with Section 719.7.

This section is necessary because Section 717 would generally exclude Type I and II buildings from the concealed space draftstopping and fireblocking provisions. The use of combustibles in nonstructural applications is limited to the listed exceptions to prevent fire spread within building elements. The severity of a potential problem increases when combustibles are located within concealed spaces that are inaccessible to manual fire fighting. This section regulates the use of combustibles within concealed spaces of noncombustible buildings. This section is referenced from Exception 21 of Section 603.1.
