Taking into consideration the corrosive nature of pool equipment rooms, can we use aluminum conduit if we are under the 2023 NEC? Is the answer the same for the 2020 NEC?

Does the National Electrical Code prohibit the use of aluminum raceway in a swimming pool equipment room?

The National Electrical Code (NEC) does not specifically prohibit the use of aluminum raceway (conduit) in swimming pool equipment rooms. However, it does provide requirements and guidelines for the selection of materials based on environmental conditions and safety considerations.

In swimming pool areas, where there may be exposure to moisture, chemicals, and other corrosive elements, it's essential to select materials that are suitable for such conditions. While aluminum is a conductive material commonly used in electrical applications, its susceptibility to corrosion in certain environments, such as swimming pool areas, may not make it the best choice.

The NEC emphasizes the importance of selecting materials that meet the necessary performance and safety standards for the specific application and environment. It's essential to consult local building codes and regulations, as well as industry standards, to determine the appropriate materials for electrical installations in swimming pool equipment rooms. In many cases, materials like PVC (polyvinyl chloride) conduit or stainless steel conduit are preferred due to their corrosion resistance properties in such environments.

Don't trust AI. You will have to read section 680 of the 2023 NEC for the correct answer.
Not a problem as I don't trust anyone until I trust them. 2020 NEC allows aluminum conduit in a swimming pool room and I do not have a 2023 NEC. If the aluminum conduit is now banned it seems odd that it took this long to decide to ban the raceway in a pool equipment room. Hopefully someone will post the code section.

2023 NEC 680.14 Corrosive Environments:

"(A) Wiring Methods.
Wiring methods shall be suitable for use in corrosive environments. Rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, rigid polyvinyl chloride conduit, reinforced thermosetting resin conduit, and liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit shall be considered suitable for use. Aluminum conduit and tubing shall not be permitted."
