Being originally from the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania, you would expect me to be a Flyers fan, which I am absolutely not. The Pittsburgh Penguins won me over when they placed their AHL team in Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. About 13 years ago, I moved to Florida and found myself with half-season tickets to the Florida Panthers, which, to be honest with you, can be brutal. Since everyone here in South Florida is from somewhere else, most of the time, the Panthers fans were always outnumbered. However, there was always one scenario that never bothered me. It was when Canadian teams came to town.
I actually love it when the Canadian teams come to town. Their fans are just fun and elevate the mood in the arena. The attitude, behavior, and spirit always energize all the fans. They are the opposite of, let's say, Rangers or Flyers fans who, quite frankly........ let's just say, are themselves. Then came last year's Stanley Cup run. I was secretly cheering for the Edmonton Oilers, even while wearing Florida Panthers gear.
You see, I always liked Edmonton, and when they first got McDavid, I was intrigued as he was just something special. So, during finals last year, I said to myself that it would be great to see Florida finally win a cup after 30 years, but I would have been satisfied seeing Canada bring the cup back home. Yeah, I know that 46% of NHL players are from Canada and only 29% are from the US, with Sweden and Russia finishing out the top 5, but the location of the franchise also means a lot. I am saying that to pre-empt some of you by pointing out that even though US teams win a lot of Stanley Cups, almost half the players in the NHL are from Canada.
Now that the Florida Panthers Stanley Cup is in the annals of history, I wouldn't be upset if I got to watch McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard & company lift the cup for Canada.
