Family Practice. Want to provide for a porte cochere that is potentially attached at one side of a building. My understanding is that this, by definition, even though it is attached, meets the definition of a canopy.

Furthermore, when I read section 3105- Awnings and canopies, all the chapter describes is that the covering (meaning roof in my mind for a porte cochere) needs to meet certain combustibility requirements.

So, where in the code would I need to look to that would tell me that a canopy may need to be protected by a sprinkler system (when the rest of the building is not required to have a sprinkler system).

Check out Ch. 5, specifically allowable building area in Section 506. Also check out Ch. 9, specifically Section 903.2 for fire sprinklers.

And if you have any patients that are sedated, be sure to check out Section 422 for ambulatory care.

Sprinkler exception for porte cochere is in NFPA 13 , see 9.2.3. Remember code (IBC) says when, Standard (NFPA 13) says how.
