next question

See highlighted area, 48" between walls, the total rise looks to be just under 6" with change in direction in the middle.

issue or no issue?

I see no issue under the I-codes, due to the minimal slope and no ramp to speak of.

Wouldn't you want to see level transitions at slope breaks, even if not ramps, to avoid wheels lifting?

1st off what one would like to see is ill relevant, if it was clean the questions would not arise, its about is there an issue.

Reason for my question is simple, I am the last one in, there are many times I see that the trades before me have not done things correctly, I point it out, contractor says I don't care, we tell them your going to be pulling it out and buying (2) sets of handrails.

A good portion of the time when we see this happen, we always get paid, when we don't point it out, we get the response you should have informed us of that, you eat the change order cost.

So, it's about being correct and on point.

Wish lists are just that, wishes

Cross slopes are not irrelevant. Where you change the slope, your Cross slope of ramp runs can exceed the two percent. work it out in your cad program. You may need a landing. Bring the slopes closer together and it may work.

ADASAD 405.7.4 Change in Direction. Ramps that change direction between runs at landings shall have a clear landing 60 inches minimum by 60 inches (1525 mm) minimum.

405.3 Cross Slope. Cross slope of ramp runs shall not be steeper than 1:48.

MH, he makes the point however that if the running slope is less than 5% it is not by definition a ramp; that then being the case is a slope transition landing still required?

Still need the cross slope to be less than 2 % on a walk

The blended transition will need to extend way up the side walks

Mark,

When I say irrelevant, I am saying that it does not matter what someone might want to have, I am trying to confirm weather it is required or not.

Example; we have been called out to provide handrails for what they are calling ramps, I noted a ramp can't have a change in direction without a landing, the same as you have noted.

The designer then brings forth these are not ramps but walkways which we wish to install handrails for.

We don't like to install handrails on NON-compliant structure. If in fact these are not ramps, and are in fact walkways I don't see a problem.

However I want to confirm they are walkways because the slope is minor and therefore compliant, then I am open to it.

The irrelevant part is simple, if not required and therefore not in violation, it is then irrelevant.

Even if not required, if rails are not installed per code, they could be a violation.
