Afternoon All,

So, I have a client with a project with the following layout.

Stair minimum stair width confirmed by RFI's with the Architect of Record is 3'-10".

The debate that is being discussed is what area of the mid-landing is the clear width measured to.

I have included a cut view of the mid landing below.
  • The handrails are currently full wraps around the outside against the walls.
    • From the edge of the nosing to the wall directly a head is 4'-0.25",
    • Which leaves 3'-10" from the nosing to the inside face of the landing stringer.
    • My position is the landing width is measured the same as the stair width.
      • and since this is a continuous landing of the flight exception 3 of 1011.6 applies and Thus, the 4'-0" depth for the mid landing is not required.
      • We have a clear width of 3'-10" on the stair flight and 4'-0.25" on the landing to the wall, but 3'-10" to the inside edge of the landing stringers.
    • So based on the drawing and a set of stair flights with a clear width of 3'-10" do you find the mid landing clear width compliant with or without the handrail on the mid landing back wall?

Stair width is not measured by clear width unless you need to comply with the 48-inch clear width requirement for stairs used as an accessible means of egress without a sprinkler system. Otherwise, stair width is measured above the handrails. Handrails can project up to 4-1/2 inches into the required width, so the required width would be the clear width between handrails plus 4-1/2 inches on each side (or less if there is a guard or wall located less than 4-1/2 inches beyond the handrail. The required width must be maintained through landings. If the stairs are wider than what is required, the landings can be narrower than the stairs as long as the landings provide the minimum required width.

Therefore, based on your drawing, the egress width provided at the landing would be measured from the face of the wall on the right-hand side (3-1/2 inches beyond the handrail projection) to the vertical guard post on the left-hand side or 4-1/2 inches beyond the handrail projection, whichever is shorter.
