I have a residential application on my desk for an addition that will be used strictly as a utility room of sorts i guess. the only things in the room will be a coal fired stove and a very large coal bin. my issue is that we cannot seem to find a code section in the 09 IRC that addresses this. The inspectors here at my office all think there should be some form of separation but cannot find it in black and white to back it up. any help will be appreciated thanks in advance

Thanks guys i guess i should have been more specific on the type of appliance. its going to be a very large coal fired boiler, size is going to be determined when we can come to a decision on the addition.

What do the manufacturer' installation & use specifications require?

"its going to be a very large coal fired boiler..." Sounds more like a furnace room.
Normally small residential boilers etc. do not require separation.

With respect to very large coal fired boilers-- I learned about coal fired boilers dealing with big ones --including including inspecting this plant twice a year that burns about 19,000 tons of coal a day--roughly 1-1/3 trainloads.
