Greetings all !

A Given: Restrooms are not habitable spaces, however,

are they "required" to provide heated \ cooled air in to them ?

Please provide the applicable Code sections with your

answers.........Thank you !

1204.1 Equipment and systems. Interior spaces intended for
human occupancy shall be provided with active or passive
space heating systems capable of maintaining an indoor temperature
of not less than 68°F (
20°C) at a point 3 feet (914
mm) above the floor on the design heating day.
Exceptions: Space heating systems are not required for:
1. Interior spaces where the primary purpose of the
space is not associated with human comfort.
2. Group F, H, S or U occupancies.

Not necessarily heat "in" them.....Vent yes, no cool

I'd agree with Steve. Not necessarily a requirement to have supply registers within the space, but will need to be temperature controlled.

Exhaust requirements will result in air being pulled in from adjacent spaces, which should keep it within the permissible temperature range. Will need a register or other means of supplying exchange air (not just around the doors ideally). Exchange of air would require the bathrooms to be within the thermal envelope; otherwise exchange of air is not permitted.

As another example...

If speaking of an unconditioned structure, such as a park restroom facility where-in a few stalls and a janitorial closet are all that is provided, then I'd say that the whole structure is non-habitable and HVAC beyond what is necessary for freeze protection of plumbing is not required. Install electric resistance wall heater set to 45*, and it is good-to-go.

O.K., ...thanks for the responses !

I have some existing facilities that are older,
and their "envelope thermal insulation" is not
that great.......Also, some of these facilities are
located in areas of a state that can get really
cool \ cold [ i.e. - 20's \ 30's Fahrenheit ].

The occupants are asking for conditioned
air in to their restrooms, ...something besides
just a source of heat.

steveray is correct. No heating/cooling required for restrooms.

That said, if I was looking strictly at semantics instead of the plain meaning: if ever there was an interior space where its primary purpose is associated with human comfort/relief, it's a toilet room!
