I have to admit I was not following the Kings and when they played Anaheim in the 2nd round; I was not cheering for them nor was I following them. After all, they are a western conference team and I am an eastern conference fan since I have been living on the east coast for 49 years (all of my life). It was not until they were in the 3rd round pitted against Chicago that I started to cheer for them. I always like an underdog and after thinking the Kings established themselves as a comeback team I had to join in the fun. Meanwhile on the east coast, with my Penguins out of it and my Panthers no where even close to being in the playoffs, my only concern was that Boston lost. Being a closet Rangers fan from a distance I did not expect to find myself cheering for Montreal. Somehow, something changed. No longer was I rooting for the Rangers. I just did not think that they had what it takes to go all the way and I was liking what I was seeing from the Habs. There was something about this years Ranger team that just rubbed me the wrong way.
With the Rangers moving on the the finals and LA eliminating Chicago I suddenly found myself liking the Kings. After watching them play for 3 rounds, I developed a liking to coach Sutter and defenseman Drew Doughty (I played defense before I became a ref). It is hard to believe that Doughty is only 24 years old. I liked their style, I liked the energy of the team and more than anything else, I loved their attitude. They are a real team and act like it. No one wants the spotlight. So I came a long way from the day that I met John Davidson at the entrance to MSG one day and became a closet Ranger fan to actually betting against them and rooting for the LA Kings. I guess in a way I knew that the western conference was certainly a better conference and I told several people "Whoever wins the western conference will win the cup". For once I was right.
My Florida Panthers season tickets are already paid for. I will cheer them on during the 2014-2015 season while still following my home state Penguins. In addition, I will pay a bit closer attention to LA Kings as more of their players have grown on my, especially Justin Williams and Jeff Carter in addition to the two previously mentioned. Last year when the Penguins came to town I just sat quietly and did not know what to do. I did not cheer either way. For me, as long as the Flyers and Bruins are eliminated, I will be pretty happy with the upcoming season. This coming from me who grew up 2 hours outside of Philly.
Hats off to the Kings on a well deserved Stanley Cup, earned the hard way.
