Crazy grab bar detail - CBC 11A-9F

[Yikes]

Why would this grab bar at the foot of the tub be 12" maximum length? In reality, with the mounting flanges, etc. the grab bar would only be about 8" long. Do you think they meant 12" minimum from the edge of the wall?20091223133830349_0001.tif[/attachment:1tp5w5a6]

ICC/ANSI A117.1 - 2003 has it as 12 inches minimum, must be a typo.

I have to agree. 8" just wouldn't give you enough gripping area for someone to safely get out of the bathtub. Also, this illustration has the seat located across the tub, similar to the shower chairs used in nursing homes but built in. If you go down to the next illustration where the seat is located at the head of the tub, you see that the grab bar for the foot of the tub is listed as 24".
