A credit union just got approval to place an operating credit union inside a high school. They will operate as a credit union and also provide business training to the students. The school district gave them space to do it.

Anyone come across this before? A little direction or guidance from anyone with a similar situation is appreciated.

Thanks.

Incidental use based on square footage?

Educational use based on it primary function being training rather than commerce?

What does the architect call it?

Re: Credit Union in High School

2006 IBC 302.1 - A room or space that is intended to be occupied at different times for different purposes shall comply with all of the requirements that are applicable to each of the purposes for which the room or space will be occupied.

Sounds like B & E to me, with E as controlling. Could be accessory use, but, it's still E. Could be non-separated mixed use, but, will that make a difference? Was the room previously a classroom, office, lounge? Will that really matter?

Had a classroom near the main entrance turned into a security guard room, waiting room, and conference room for visitors. So that all the other doors could be locked from the outside. Classed it as B & E, and approved.

Three of our high schools have them here.

They are part of the educational mission of the school and are E use just as the typing classes were.

For full disclosure I am on the Board of our Credit Union.

jar546,

A couple of years ago while traveling through the great state of Minnesota, there was a newspaper article in a town called Owatonna that was proposing the same thing you are questioning. Maybe it was approved? Maybe they have a building department?

Why would they need a credit union when they have one of the world's greatest banks?

Re: Credit Union in High School

I found this out by overhearing a conversation at a restaurant last night so I called the credit union and the job is already done. They did not want to spend money on an architect so they hired another company that specializes in doing this.

They will now be applying with a permit application and stamped/sealed drawing from an architect.
