Exit double 3'0" doors at the front entrance of a restaurant, travel 12 ft long X 6' wide walkway to the beginning of the curb ramp. The curb ramp to the HC parking space accessible aisle is only 36" wide and not centered on the 6' wide walk.

Some are saying the curb ramp should be 6' wide to match the exit width provided at the doors. Some say the distance traveled is sufficient to only require the 36" minimum curb width.

I can't find a code provision to require a wider curb ramp.

Is there one?

Good design or bad design?

There is a remodel on the project and the question came up about requiring Detectable Warnings (A117.1 - 406.13) for the existing curb ramp and then the required width discussion started.

I would start with Ex 2....I've never seen anyone require a 6' sidewalk out to the public way, not saying it is right or wrong, but I could see where we could require it....

3411.6 Alterations. A building, facility or element that is altered shall comply with the applicable provisions in Chapter 11 of this code and ICC A117.1, unless technically infeasible. Where compliance with this section is technically infeasible, the alteration shall provide access to the maximum extent technically feasible.

Exceptions:

1. The altered element or space is not required to be on an accessible route, unless required by Section 3411.7.

2. Accessible means of egress required by Chapter 10 are not required to be provided in existing buildings and facilities.

1005.1 Minimum required egress width. The means of egress width shall not be less than required by this section. The total width of means of egress in inches (mm) shall not be less than the total occupant load served by the means of egress multiplied by 0.3 inch (7.62 mm) per occupant for stairways and by 0.2 inch (5.08 mm) per occupant for other egress components.

Curb ramp can be 36" wide minimum irregardless of the width of the sidewalk and or the required exit width of the doors leading to the curb ramp. It also does not need to be centered. The detectable warnings need to be the width of the "0" curb of the curb ramp width.

Here is something to consider:

1003.5 Elevation change. Where changes in elevation of less

than 12 inches (305 mm) exist in the means of egress, sloped

surfaces shall be used. Where the slope is greater than one

unit vertical in 20 units horizontal (5-percent slope), ramps

complying with Section 1010 shall be used. Where the difference

in elevation is 6 inches (152 mm) or less, the ramp shall

be equipped with either handrails or floor finish materials that

contrast with adjacent floor finish materials.

If we know how much rise is on the curb, then the answer can be determined

Note: Best practice to center the ramp with the sidewalk and doors as most folks follow straight lines.

11B-405.8 Handrails. Exception #4: At door landings, handrails are not required on ramp runs less than 6" in rise or 72" in length.

What is his change in elevation as his sidewalk is 12' long (would the 12' be measured from 5' forward of the door to top of curb ramp?)
