Curved Transition

I'm working on an alternative staircase for a commercial movie theater.

The current layout is awkward, although it meets code.

The curved transition, I believe, conforms to code based on 1029.10.1.2 in IBC 2015 pg 290. My concern is that currently all the runs are uniform, and the center run of the curved transition is 2' - 4".

Is it entirely necessary to have curved stairs? Is this part of the means of egress?

Curved stairs are not required. The issue is that the standard solution is awkward for wayfinding and I am attempting to create a better path of travel.

This is a means of egress. It is the isle of a movie theater.

should work as long as you meet rise and run

Have seen curved stairs in theaters before

Rise and run are standard. The issue is that I need to provide a code reference that indicates this arrangement works. In the case of new-built stairs the runs must be uniform. You can see this in the first image with standard stairs. When in the curved arrangement the center "run" is 2' - 4". I need to know if IBC considers this a run and thus must be uniform to the other runs, or if it is considered a landing. Additionally if it is considered a landing does it meet depth requirements for landings in this case?

This may require talking to someone at the ICC.

Given that this is an Assembly (Theater) and that the curved stair is part of the means of egress, I suspect that the plan checker would ask for the inner radius of the landing to be at least the same as the width of the stairs, that is 4'-3".

Arcitct,

FWIW, the curved design, IMO, ...provides a smoother,
more easily navigable flow of the MOE.

See what the Plans Examiner says and go from there.

Edit: I misread that.

That is my concern.
