Hi, This project is in Anaheim, California.
We are working on Tenant Improvement for day care center required to have Conditional Use Permit.
Our occupany load is 45 children and 4 employees.
When we designate the area for outdoor play, do we require 45 x 75sqf = 3,375sqf or
Can we have a shift plan for outdoor activity spliting the kids group into 3, 15x75sqf= 1,125sqf

Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum!
I think the question you are asking is not a building code question, but rather a state daycare licensing requirement to have at least 75 SF of outdoor play area per child.
As I understand it, the state will allow you to split up that 3,375 SF into multiple smaller play areas that add up to the same total amount. It is likely that when you divide it into 3 different areas, licensing might require the daycare operator to have adult supervision in each play area, so you might want to make sure the owner has budgeted for that from an operations standpoint.

I recall a project years ago where the outdoor play space for daycare was an odd shape, leftover from the yards between buildings, which created 4 different zones.. But it all flowed together, and I think the state required 20' minimum clear width in any dimension to count it as a usable play area.

Does that answer your question?

He’s not talking about spitting the playground but rather limiting how many kids are in the playground. Hence the “shift” play period.
Thank you ICE, Yes. This is what I meant. We dont have enough space for total 3,375sqf. Can we go with 1/3 of 3,375sqf for each group in different time period?

Several answers above reference the State Licensing authority. We designed such a project a couple years ago in So Cal. Yes, your state agency governs the answer to your question. But you also should get a review by your local fire marshal for them to review the life safety issues.
