Existing building constructed in 1981 with an enclosed drive through area for customers to pick up and drop off their cars for service.

This area is now being altered by converting part of it to office space and turning another part into a new car delivery area.

What are the ventilation requirements? Do I keep the existing requirements or must I upgrade to the 2009 requirements. Can I apply IMC 502.14 exception 3 - This section shall not apply to motor vehicle service areas where engines are operated inside the building only for the duration necessary to move the motor vehicles in and out of the building.

Seems like one could reason that this is the same as the showroom - cars inside the building.

Or one could reason that this is no worse than a drive through, so the original provisions apply.

Or one could reason that since the customer is driving the car out of the building, they could sit there with the engine running while they adjust mirrors, seats, etc. and 0.75 cfm/sq ft should be provided.

What do you all think?

Thanks.

Having worked in a dealership that had exactly what you are describing I would apply exception 3 and move on. The few who do make those minor adjustments do so in less than 2 minutes and when you open the big door well there is more than enough air exchange
