Small public school building serving maximum 40 students with various learning issues. Some of the issues are mental and their coping skills that when things are not going their way they run. By run I mean out the door and down the street. Staff is looking for a way for them not to get out of the building or the classroom when they run.

I suggested hobbling them but that did not go over very well as you can imagine. Seriously though I do see where the 2018 does allow delayed egress on classroom doors and I am okay with making an exception and allow them on the 2 exit doors. Just looking for other ideas for the classroom doors. 3 classrooms, each room has 3 doors a student can exit. No sprinklers but heat and smoke detectors throughout. I believe this facility resembles an I occupancy along with being an E occupancy so I am looking for a safe common sense approach for keeping the students from bolting from the classroom even if not 100% code compliant
Maximum 15 students in a class room with 1 teacher and 3 adult helpers so plenty of adults to assist in an emergency

So three doors

do they need three exits ??

Two exits??

one exit??

I would start there.

Sad when four adults cannot watch 15 people.

I would not deviate from code,,,, especially in this setting

Can you use secondary barriers (fences) that permit egress from the building but maintain the ability to keep runaways from getting out of the control area?

No one exit leads directly to the HC parking space and the other within 5 feet of the public sidewalk

No they only need one door from each classroom and 2 exits from the building. Right now they have put some small tables in front of two of the doors in each classroom but Friday the student working at that table pushed it aside and left through the door fortunately he did not try to go outside.

Ok one exit required

Brick up the other two

or

Make sure no exit signs above them and approve a locking means you can sleep with

or put something like Detex on. Not sure if that would cause more problems

or lock them down acceptable to you and put a curtain over the door
