TRUCKEE — The Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce will partner with the Town of Truckee to host a Disabled Accessibility Workshop to help businesses understand the regulations of compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), diminish their risk of being sued, and potentially reduce their fees and damages and/or strategies for litigation if your business is sued.
All business owners are encouraged to attend the workshop being held Thursday, Jan. 13 at Truckee Town Hall, 4-6 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public, no RSVP required.
“Being educated and proactive is the best prevention any business can utilize when it comes to ADA compliance,” said Lynn Saunders, president/CEO of the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce. “We have put together a panel of experts that will cover several aspects of this topic. They will help take a big book of codes and put it into the real world for attendees.”
Panelists include Michael Lavallee, Town of Truckee Chief Building Official; Mike Gardner, Certified Access Specialist (CASp) and Tony DeCristoforo, Stoel Rives LLP.
“We want businesses to know there are steps they can take to get out ahead of any lawsuit. We can offer ways a business can comply with code without breaking the bank,” said panelist Mike Gardner, Certified Access Specialist (CASp).
Panelists will discuss reform legislation SB 1608 which is designed to promote and increase compliance with laws providing equal public access in places of business to individuals with disabilities, while reducing unwarranted litigation that does not advance that goal.
The Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce is a 600 member business organization whose mission is to develop and promote local business and tourism, while improving the community's quality of life. Contact the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce at 530-587-8808 or e-mail info@truckee.com for further information.
