I don't think I've ever heard of a restriction but this is not my everyday end of the book. Is there a minimum distance from a buried LP tank to a well? We're on '09 IRC.

Thanks.

SECTION P2902 PROTECTION OF POTABLE WATER SUPPLY

P2902.1 General. A potable water supply system shall be designed and installed as to prevent contamination from nonpotable liquids, solids or gases being introduced into the potable water supply.

Best I can find in the 2009 IRC. NYS defers to State Health Dept regs, not sure what your State has.

I've wished on occasion but I'm afraid these rocks cooked on through the hydrocarbon window well. It's a residential water well. We have a good location sitewise that is only about 30' from the wellhead. I was mainly interested in knowing if there was a code exclusion zone that kicked this idea out before asking further locally. Thanks guys, I'll call the BO in the morning and see where we go from here.

Thanks Paul,

This is in VA. The health dept had no minimum distance although they suggest 50', which seems to be a default in the regs you linked to. The homeowner has flagged another location, further from the house but about the same distance from the wellhead.

Don't think there are any requirements for well clearances. Of course there are clearances for the tank from things like lot lines, ignition sources and windows. Clearances vary depending on the size of the tank.
