If spray foam insulation is applied to the inside face of a pre-cast concrete, cast in place concrete or solid masonry wall, and the spray foam is then covered with an approved thermal barrier (e.g., metal studs with 5/8" gyp bd), does the IBC require this assembly to be tested in accordance with NFPA 285? In other words, does the code consider this to be the use of spray foam in an exterior wall, or would this be considered an interior use of spray foam that requires only a thermal barrier between the foam and the interior?
Also, IBC 2012, 2603.5 Commentary, says "The intent is to regulate the use of an insulating envelope over the exterior of a structure when the envelope provides no structural support than the transfer of wind loads." What's the purpose of this statement? Is there supposed to be some distinction between load bearing exterior walls and those that don't provide structural support?
