Required head height for an emergency escape and rescue opening?

It's not part of a means of egress (even though my index labels it "Emergency Egress"), so I don't see any requirement. R3 occupancy. Sloped ceilings. I guess you could be made to crawl on your hands and knees to reach it? (to be clear, I think you could be forced to kiss the carpet to get to the EERO, although my situation is not that bad)

Thanks,

Tim

I guess yes any eero can be at ground level

Seems you still need to meet minimum ceiling hight in the room????

Interesting question, one of the exceptions in the 2012 Section 1029, to the EERO is that if the basement is less than 80" in height , they are not required, but then that would not comply with minmum headroom requirements. The IRC speaks to EERO's opening under decks, that there must be a minimum of 36" verticle clearance.........what do you have?

This is sloped ceilings on second story. Section 1208.2 states "any portion of the room measuring less than 5 feet from the finished floor to the ceiling shall not be included in any computation of the minimum area thereof". They have the minimum area with ceiling height >5'. The section does not prohibit ceiling heights less than 5 feet, just doesn't allow you to use that space for the minimum area.

Ultimately, if they wanted to slope the ceiling to a 3' kneewall and put the window in at the floor level, I think it would comply (at least with this section). I don't even see a limit on what could obstruct the path to the EERO.

I was just throwing it out there to see if anybody had tackled a headroom scenario inside the building. State said.. good question .

Well if you have to crawl out of a basement window up, can crawl to a bedroom window with five feet of clearance

You are suppose to crawl anyway

Depend on what code edition is enforced the '06 & '09 chapter for exterior wall and the 2012 section for guards requires fall protection. As a reminder they make EERO windows for slope ceilings.

Very true.. Since the required height is 24" I guess they could drop a duct to within 24" of the floor and still be good.

Just goes back to the fact that the code doesn't cover common sense :)

Thought it was an interesting point to discuss.
