Existing Building, Type 3B, Business use group on ground floor and R-2 Apartments on floors 2, 3, and 4, getting renovated greater than 60%.

There is an egress balcony serving the Apartments on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors. The 4th floor balcony has a roof above it. All balconies have access to an unenclosed / exterior stairs and also rated interior stairs. The door swing is into the building, in the direction of egress travel.

The balcony is greater than 50% open.

The exterior wall is 15" of brick, so the required 2 hour rated bearing wall condition is met. Separation is not required between the exterior balcony and the interior per 1019.2.

Due to space limitations, the idea is to penetrate the exterior wall at 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floor levels and run exhaust and outside air intake ductwork along the outside of the exterior wall up through the egress balconies and balcony roof.

On the interior, a one hour shaft would be required with smoke and fire dampers as I am penetrating 3 floors.

Is a rated shaft required through the balcony floor, which would require fire and smoke dampers where the ducts penetrate the shaft? What code sections do I look at for the answer?

My thinking is to rate the shaft and penetrations into the shaft.

Thanks
