Show of hands....Who thinks that this code section means the individual units in a self-storage facility need lights in them? "Serving a room" is a little confusing and whether or not the room (being exit access) is incorporated into that.....

1008.2 Illumination Required

The means of egress serving a room or space shall be illuminated at all times that the room or space is occupied.

Exceptions:
  1. 1.Occupancies in Group U.
  2. 2.Aisle accessways in Group A.
  3. 3.Dwelling units and sleeping units in Groups R-1, R-2 and R-3.
  4. 4.Sleeping units of Group I occupancies.

Look at the same section in the 2024 edition. There is a revision that excluded self-service storage units 400 sq. ft. or less in area.

Does this question refer to what I think of as the "typical" self-storage facility -- a group of low-rise buildings on a site with each unit having a garage door to/from the outdoors? To the more recent indoor self-storage builidings, where the units are accessed from an interior corridor (and possibly an elevator)? Both?

For arguments purposes, lets say both....But It may be semi moot with clarification in 2024....

Thanks Ron....I looked at commentary, but not 2024....I guess that clears it up in that the intent covers the room and not just the egress from/ serving it.....Now I just have to convince an architect that self-storage facilities have an occupant load....

What I've seen in self storage units:
1) People running a warehouse business with employees moving, stocking, stacking boxes.
2) People spending a full day there running a business.
3) People using it as a workshop for woodworking and other small manufacturing businesses.

We can't control how well management enforces their own rules. I bet some of you have seen worse,

I never did a plan review for self-storage and never saw emergency lighting in the storage spaces when inspecting. Maybe because illimitation is required for a compiling means of egress and the overhead door does not comply as a means of egress.

Not emergency...just egress...and there is no prohibition to using an OH door for egress, just some qualifiers...
