I have a 3 story, Type VB, R-2 w/ sprinklers.

Can we apply EPS insulation over the sheathing on the exterior wall?

Per 602.5 Type V, 'any material permitted by this code'.

But per Chapter 26, it appears we need a thermal barrier if we do use EPS foam.

I ask, because i'm also getting conflicting information on the internet as well, that foam is allowed on Type V, without a thermal barrier.

Will there be gypsum board applied on the interior side of the walls? If so, then you’ve already met the requirement for a thermal barrier.

Thanks Ron, there is, and in this case that will work.

It sounds as though a thermal barrier is necessary, however, with a Type VB.
