Hi all,
I need a little interpretation of the 2015 IBC. In 505.3, it is stated:
“Equipment platforms shall not be a part of any mezzanine”

My interpretation is: this statement refers to area calculation and not physical connection. Is this correct?
In other words a mezzanine cannot get additional “freebies” area because it has an equipment platform. However, if a mechanical platform shares the same floor assembly as a mezzanine, this should be acceptable as long as the area limitation complies with 505.2.1 and 505.3.1

By "freebies" you mean calculation of fire area in reference to 505.2.1 is correct.
"Whereas the area of mezzanines is included in the calculation of the fire area (see Section 505.1), the area of equipment platforms is not included as part of the fire area. The area of mezzanines and equipment platforms,
however, is summed when they are in the same room, and the aggregate area is limited to two-thirds of the area of the room."

So as long as they are a part of same room and comply to the area limitations, it shouldn't matter if the equipment platform and the mezzanine are both elevated on the same floor assembly?
