Existing Ice Machine

I have an existing, installed Ice Machine that also
dispenses filtered, chilled drinking water.
The basin on this appliance catches any extra ice
and water not used by the user, just like a soda
drink dispensing machine at a fast food
restaurant.

Is the drain line on this appliance required to have
an indirect connection thru an air gap, or can it be
connected directly to the regular drain piping; ahead
of the P-Trap ?……….FWIW, my concern is that
contaminants from the drainage piping will migrate
upstream to the basin.

Interesting... initially, my gut instinct was to say yes, it had to be via an indirect waste connection; however, given that the basin is purely a collection for waste, how is any different from a sink basin or a drinking fountain basin (both of which are directly plumbed to the drain waste)? I think you can be plumbed straight, that is unless the manufacturer's listing indicates otherwise.

If it can migrate to the ice, absolutely...

802.1.1 Food handling. Equipment and fixtures utilized
for the storage, preparation and handling of food shall
discharge through an indirect waste pipe by means of an
air gap.

Adding to my other post...

2018 IPC CH. 8 Indirect/Special Waste

801.2 Protection

Devices, appurtenances, appliances and apparatus intended to serve some special function, such as sterilization, humidification, distillation, processing, cooling, or storage of ice or foods, and that discharge to the drainage system, shall be provided with protection against backflow, flooding, fouling, contamination and stoppage of the drain.

I would say that the ice storage compartment drain must have an indirect connection to the drain waste; however, the waste basin would not so long as the listing does not indicate otherwise.

O.K., thanks for the input & applicable Code
Section.

I am not sure about the current connection for
the Ice Bin……..I think that both are piped in
together, in to a single 3/4” drain line and then in
to the regular piping underneath the countertop
on which the appliance is setting.

Much Thanks y’all ! ;)

If interconnected, then the combined line should go to an indirect waste with an air gap.
