Does the electric motor of a fire pump have to be connected before the main disconnect or is it simply allowed?

I think it is allowed.

This question came up because I have a fire pump for a sprinkler system that the electrician just wants to put on a regular breaker at the MDP

Prior to this, all other electric fire pumps were spec'd out with a connection before the main disco so we never had to question it.

I agree with Coug Dad. Also the fire pump source can't be located within the same cabinet, enclosure or vertical switchboard as the service disconnecting means. (See 695.3(A)(1))

Which Article actually "requires" the fire pump to be connected ahead of the disco?

I read where it is permitted, but I did not find the actual "requirement"!

Thanks!
