In the IBC, there are instances where the definitions and criteria for 'Fire Separation Distance' and 'Exterior Wall Ratings' can become intertwined, especially when considering mixed-use buildings or properties with multiple structures. How do you interpret the requirements for exterior wall ratings in relation to fire separation distances when dealing with a complex structure? Are there specific scenarios or building configurations where you've found the IBC's guidelines challenging to apply consistently?

Is it perfect...no, but challenging, not really....When it is a firewall situation, you have to remind them they need the imaginary lot line...

[BF] FIRE SEPARATION DISTANCE. The distance measured from the building face to one of the following:
  1. The closest interior lot line.
  2. To the centerline of a street, an alley or public way.
  3. To an imaginary line between two buildings on the lot.
The distance shall be measured at right angles from the face of the wall.
