Five Foot Diameter

Good afternoon (or morning or night!),

I am working on a very compact TI project. There is an existing bathroom but I need to add an ADA stall and adequate spaces.

Anyway, from my interpretation of the code, the five foot turning space in a restroom can encroach under the sink, as deep as the sink provides 27" of clear height.

Basically, the code says the 60" circle requires 27" clear from floor. A lavatory requires 27" clr height for 8" min. So, technically, I can use this 8" as part of my turning space?

Normally, I would provide ample space, but this 8" will actually save me a great deal on the over quality of the project.

Hope that was clear! Thanks in advance.

In the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (adopted in Georgia), you could also use the toe space. Section 304.3.1 "The space shall be permitted to include knee and toe clearance complying with 306".

MH will probably come up with it, but I know there is a "layer cake" diagram out there that shows the diameter getting smaller as you elevate....If that makes any sense...In other words, it is not a 60" cylinder...

I am on the road, I do not have access to my home computer database

It is in the Fair housing Manual page 19
