I'm working on a proposed new multipurpose building for an existing elementary school. The building will serve as a cafeteria most of the time, with tables and seats that fold-out from their wall attachment (example: http://www.foldingequipmentcompany.com/in-wall-cafetria-tables.html ).

There will also be occasional school assemblies, with the tables folded away and other non-fixed stackable seats brought in. An example would be a holiday performance by the schoolkids, and their parents are in the audience. The kids are up front on a permanent platform (like a "stage" but without all the proscenium arch and flyway stuff; not a legitimate stage).

In that scenario, I anticipate the plumbing fixture count to be Group "A", 15 SF per person for the audience.

QUESTION: Do I also need to include the platform/stage area in the plumbing fixture occupant load? After all, those kids who are onstage have already been accounted for in the existing plumbing facilities serving classrooms elsewhere on campus.

If it helps, California Plumbing Code Table A Occupat Load Factor says: "For building or space with mixed occupancies, use appropriate occupancy group for each area (for example, a school may have an "A" occupancy for the gymnasium, a "8" occupancy for the oflice, an "E" occupancy for the classrooms, etc.)

Yikes,

It has been my interpretation of the fixture counts to apply the most

restrictive \ most accommodating..........In your application, is it

realistically feasible for the Stage Areas AND the classrooms to be

used at the same time [ i.e. - a higher "combined" occupant load ]

That's the way to design it isn't it ?

RE: `10 CBC, Section 302.1 - General: "Structures or portions of

structures shall be classified with respect to occupancy in one or

more of the groups listed below...........A room or space that is

intended to be occupied at different times for different purposes

shall comply with all of the requirements that are applicable to each

of the purposes for which the room or space will be occupied.

Structures with multiple occupancies or uses shall comply with

Section 508."

I agree, each space should receive an occupant calc. I would guess that the lunch room requirement would be less than the Thespian crowd.

Not only will the A-1 assembly configuration for plays have a higher occupant load 7 sq per person for the chairs only seating area and 15 sq ft per person for the platform, for women the toilet count is 1:65 for women in the A-1 configuration vs 1:75 in the A-2 lunchroom configuration (2012 unamended).

For nonsimultaneous occupancy you have to ask if assemblies could be held with one group while another is in class or would the attached classrooms be used to hold the next act up when multiple classes are each coming and going to do successive acts or songs in the assembly for parents.

I would also count all restrooms within 500 feet of the building that the occupants have access to.

Note:

Not in code but I do not see full occupancy of all buildings at the same time. The same occupants will be using the multi purpose rooms as the classrooms.

So if I were designing or approving it I would allow juint usage
