Florida Building Code Guidelines for Asphalt Shingle Roofing

This is not an all-inclusive review of the entire section. I will break them down into separate threads on this forum.

1. General Installation Parameters​

  • Height and Slope Limitations (3.1): Asphalt shingles should not be installed on roofs higher than 33 feet unless specified in the Product Approval. The roof slope must adhere to Table 1515.2.
  • Installation Over Insulated Roofs (3.2): When installing over insulated roof decks, a nailable substrate compliant with Section 1520.5.7 must be placed before the underlayment and shingles.
  • Nailing and Compliance (3.3): Shingles must be installed as per Product Approval specifications, using at least six 12 gauge by 1¼ inch corrosion-resistant annular ring shank nails, penetrating through the sheathing or wood plank by a minimum of 1/8 inch, unless architectural considerations dictate otherwise.

2. Underlayment Specifications​

  • Code Compliance (4.1): Must align with Chapter 15 of the Florida Building Code, Building.
  • Fastening Requirements (4.2): Utilize 12 gauge by 1¼ inch corrosion-resistant annular ring shank nails with tin caps, following a specified grid pattern.

3. Metal Accessories​

  • Compliance and Installation (5.1 - 5.4): All metal accessories must comply with Section 1517.6 and RAS 111. Specific dimensions for eave and gable drip metal, valley metal, and fastening details are outlined.

4. Shingle Installation​

  • Application Details (6.1 - 6.7): Guidelines cover intersections, starter strips, course alignment, and valley and rake course termination, emphasizing the importance of following the manufacturer’s Product Approval for course layout and fastening details.

5. Fastening Guidelines​

  • Nail Placement and Technique (7.1 - 7.3): Specifies the number of nails per shingle and their placement, emphasizing the importance of driving fasteners straight and avoiding damage to shingles or underlying roofing materials.

Note​
