The Fortuna Chamber of Commerce holds weekly luncheons to update community on upcoming events and provide information through presentations from local organizations. Recently, those presentations included Humboldt County 2nd District Supervisor Estelle Fennell updating attendees on the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Tina Nerat of the Small Business Development Center also spoke at the most recent meeting.
Fennell said the board was meeting with residents and local business owners to get feedback about their concerns, questions, and what they see as the steps that individual businesses can take to become compliant.
With the recent upwelling of frustration over Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuits filed in the region by Eureka attorney Jason Singleton, the supervisors voted in January to gather information from local businesses and chambers of commerce in their districts.
Recent discussions have brought up the possibility of funding to help businesses get up to ADA standards to better serve the community as a whole.
Nerat spoke about the services that the center -- with offices in Crescent City and Eureka -- can offer local businesses.
Announcements at the recent meeting consisted of a Celtic Concert at Fortuna Library, an upcoming Home Based Business Expo on March 2, the Redwood Comedy Festival on April 26 and a local Girl Scout explained what the local troops are doing in the area.
The next mixer will be held at the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department in Fortuna sponsored by FVFD, Moonlight Catering and Stir Fry Willie.
