so the IFC says 303.4 Appliances shall not be installed in a location subject to vehicle impact damage except where protected by approved means.

The UPC under water heaters says similar.

Both never define what is required.

What have other BO or inspection personnel been requiring?

Up here in slab heating is very popular and newer construction is almost exclusively wall hung boilers now a days but older home still older 18" above the floor platforms. Real estate inspectors write them up even if the were constructed 30 years ago - and the first stop is to me asking why I never required bollards

There is no "one size fits all" answer regarding how to protect a
water heater........Some can use bollards installed in front of
them, or something akin to parking space bumpers, or installing
the water heater completely out of the area of vehicles, or even
in the attic spaces.

A performance issue, they can't prescribe everything and if they did the cry's would complain that they have no flexibility. Use common sense, if it will protect it will dent what ever runs into it, or move the water heater/boiler to an impact free location.

Funny, cause you can put it on the back side of a 2x4 or 2x3 wall and no one can say boo....one bollard or wheel chock/stop
