Is there a requirement for a "stop switch" for fuel gas in a public school science lab?

It seems to be standard practice these days here in Texas but I need a reference (if one exists).

Thanks, in advance.

pack,

Are you asking about the fuel gas lines to the individual experiment

hoods or desks, or to the whole lab dept.? Section 409.1 in the

`06 IFGC DOES require "shut off" valves of the approved type on

gas piping systems. An "approved type" would need to comply

with the manufacturer' [ of the appliance ] instructions and the

NEC if electrical in nature. Also, see Section 7.9.2.4 in the

NFPA 54.

" 7.9.2.4 - Shutoff Valve For Laboratories.

Each laboratory space containing two or more gas outlets

installed on a tables, benchs, or in a hoods in educational,

research, commercial and industrial occupancies shall have a

single shutoff valve through which all such gas outlets are

supplied. The shutoff valve shall be accessible and shall be

located within the laboratory or located adjacent to the

laboratory’s egress door and shall be identified. "

There is typically a solenoid valve (stop switch) located near the teacher's desk that allows the teacher to shut off the gas, water, etc. to all stations in the classroom if something goes awry.

Most often we see this used as a means to eliminate unauthorized or un-supervised use of the devices in labs. The labs here have them located in a lockable cabinet that must be open to operate the valve. In other words, if the manual valave is open, the cabinet door does not close.

North Star hit it on the head, I think... shut off the gas to the lab on your way out of the room. The public schools here do it.. and the switch needs to be re-set at the gas manifold.. not inside the classroom.
