I just posted an article on my blog that will be published in an upcoming edition of Doors & Hardware magazine. I would appreciate any feedback you might have...NFPA 72 is not a document I've spent a lot of time with. The free cup of coffee that I offered on my blog applies to y'all too...it will take at least one cup to get through it. Or hot cocoa...:cheers

I Dig Hardware / I Hate Hardware » Decoded: Fusible Links and Smoke-Actuated Hold-Opens

When fuseable links were conceived, it was for the purpose of controlling fire. Controlling fire with a barrier is controlling smoke with a barrier. When electronics came into the picture and the detection of the incipient stage was possible, the concept was changed to smoke detection which is faster and less dangerous than a growing fire.

I think their continued usage is monetary than functionary, thus are still grandfathered in to this day. When the codebook can make codes applicable to all without substantial cost to become compliant, then more will become so.
