A proposal has come in substituting the gypsum panels in ASW 0810. The assembly calls for 2 layers of 1" shaft liner. The proposed substitution is to replace the 2 1" layers with 4 1/2" layers of shaft liner. I can find no basis to approve this in the GA manual explanatory notes or in the UL guide info. I do find notes that the dimensions listed are minimums. Anyone encountered this before? As far as I know there is no such thing as 1/2" shaft liner.

You are correct, there is no such thing as 1/2-inch shaftliner--that is called 1/2-inch gypsum board.

That compromise would not be within the acceptable conditions outlined by GA. However, they are free to have the assembly tested to see if it will work.

I wrote the OP back when I assumed it would take GA a long time to respond to my inquiry. Kudos to them, they confirmed my position within minutes. Customer service is worth it's weight in gold! DP will find another assembly.
