There is a regulator on the meter set that has a vent on it. That vent is typically to be 3 ft horizontally from air intakes (infinite vertical), openings, etc. However, this is a utility thing. But, if someone cuts an opening into a wall or what have you, and there is an existing meter regulator there, then it is your call to relocate the opening, or, have the utility relocate the regulator. I have seen them install piping on the outlet of the regulator vent to direct the vent to another location.
Years ago in our area one of these regulators vented and the gas was sucked into the air intake of a side wall mounted direct vent fireplace vent that was installed (without a permit) directly above the meter set. The gas caught fire in the stove and started shooting flames out the vent and caught the wall and soffit on fire. The damage was minimal, but it is sure something to keep in mind.
