In Mercantile & Assembly occupancies where your number of fixtures requires the Uni-sex restroom; how do you control who uses this room. In particular an Open Mall, under the 2009 Codes and pending 2012 are allowed to have General Public Restrooms. Since the number of fixtures will most likely exceed an aggregate of six, the Uni-sex restroom will be required and such restrooms will be required to have a privacy lock. Now the security/control of the room! You will not want just anyone using the room without some sort of control. People with mischief on their mind could get in lock the door and do whatever without someone to monitor the use of the room. How does the AHJ allow security control of the room?

I guess you could put a spy cam in there but don't let anyone see you do it!

How is this any different than any single occupancy bathroom with a privacy latch?

But now you've put the idea in my head...

I did not find anything the would prohibit having the room locked against entry

or the use of a Buzz in electronic release from the security desk monitored by an outside camera system

other than that an out of order sign would be my solution as an owner.

No difference from any single use facility....It up to mall security.

The Uni-sex Restroom could also be like the ones in airports......No doors

to the main restroom area, but latches on the individual stalls.

FWIW, those intending to do mischief will find a way around any security

system.

Well obviously if it is a unisex room there is some sort of sex going on. Isn't that what the room is designed for?

But only for one at a time.

uni-

a combining form occurring in loanwords from Latin ( universe ), used, with the meaning “one,” in the formation of compound words ( unicycle ).

A mall I'm familiar with has a call button, CCTV camera, and a maglock for entry.

Walk up, push buzzer, get ogled, and gain entry. easy peasy :D
