Green Roofs Face Building Code Challenges

Sounds to me like somebody is just trying to resist change. Rather than focus on the fact that green roofs may not be explicitly mentioned one should ask why they cannot be used. Sod roofs are regularly designed in other parts of the country and are considered to comply with the building code requirements.

The one apparently valid issue that needs addressing is that if the wind speed is 160mph there needs to be proof that the roof does not lift off at that wind speed.

Why are we suddenly worried about occupiable area just because dirt is placed on the roof? This should not be an issue unless code compliant stairs are added. If the underlying system has the appropriate fire resistance and the soil is not combustible I do not see the problem.

The issue about weight of the roof is already addressed in the code. An engineer would need to design the structure for the additional weight.

The reference to best management practices is unclear. This is not a part of the IBC. Is there something special in the Florida statutes?
