Just picked up some prints for 2 separate additions to two separate buildings for an explosives manufacturer. Architect is stating footing drawings are designed based on 2500 lb bearing capacity BUT the contractor is responsible for verifying soil capacity. This is working backwards huh?

Not really the architects has done their work. Now they need to get a RDP to generate a soils report, in accordance with chap. 18.

With explosives, does that put you in a seismic D, E or F zone :lol:

My point is why bother designing a foundation before you do soil testing?

Oh yes, so when the soil testing does not match what you spec'd out, you can get paid to redesign it! :eek:

It is not all that uncommon for the structure to be designed before the soils report. Geo is usually not in the A/E services. It is typically provided by the owner. The A/E will often have a schedule (and manpower commitments) they must meet that does not allow them to wait for the owner's geo report. The A/E will ask over and over again for the soils report with no response from the owner. The A/E then puts the owner on notice that the design is proceeding based upon an assumed soil condition. The result is that the structure is usually over designed based upon an assumed geo report. But the A/E meets his contracted schedule. Ideal? certainly not, but it does happen.

If engineered fill is used, the proctors aren't done during the design phase.
