Experts from the Village of Hamilton By-Laws, adopted May 1, 1866:

No person shall make,aid,construct or assist in making any riot, noise, or disturbance of any kind, including firing any cannon, gun, or other fire arm, fire cracker, or other combustible substance in any public street nor within five rods of any dwelling house, upon penalty of five dollars.

No person shall bring or have within the village any dead carcass or other unwholesome substance, or any putrid meat, fish, hides, or skins, upon penalty of fifteen dollars.

It shall be the duty of the Fire Wardens to inspect buildings, to examine stoves, fireplaces and thier fixtures, and to inquire into the manner of disposing and keeping of ashes, and to cause ashes or any other substance which they may deem dangerous, to be removed or kept safe; and the Fire Wardens are hereby empowered to enter any building, for the purposes above mentioned.

Any privy, slaughter house, decayed vegetables, and offal of any kind emitting a disagreeable, foul, or noxious odor are declared niusances, and shall be abated forthwith, under penalty of twenty five dollars.

No person shall go into the waters of the Chenango Canal for the purpose of bathing, between the hours of five oclock in the morning and eight oclock in the evening.

There's more, including the display of "natural curiosities, circuses, caravans, musical or theatrical entertainments" and don't "obstruct any gutter, sluiceway, sewer" etc.

Just a little glimpse into the past provides a perspective on what we do today.
 
We don't tolerate any hootin' or hollerin' here.

Yelling, shouting, etc. Yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or

singing on public streets between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

or at any time or place that disturbs the sleep, peace, comfort or

repose of persons more than 30 feet away.
 
19-2 Bawdyhouses or Houses of Ill Fame.

No bawdyhouses or house of ill fame shall be kept or maintained within the City; and no person shall keep such house or be an inmate of, or in any way be connected with any such house, and no person shall permit any tenement building or premises in his or her possession or under his or her control to be used for any such purpose. (R.O. 1947 § 903)
 
Ordinance No. 17.

An ordinace entitled: "An ordinance prohibiting the keeping of hogs, pigs or swine within the corporate limits . . .

Section 10: Nothing in this ordinance shall apply to any dogs which have been licensed and vaccinated under the laws of the town of Sherwood, except, proud bitches must be kept penned up and dogs of a notoriouslt bad or dangerous temperament . . .

Section 12: Whereas a great number of animals and fowls are running at large in the Town . . .

Dangerous Trades - Section 3

No person, corporation or company shall erect or maintain any manufactory or place of business dangerous to life or detrimental to health, without the without the written permission of this Board and all such establishments shall be kept in such condition so as not to be offensive or detrimental to public health. No offensive or deleterious waste or substance shall be allowed to accumulate on such premises or allowed to run in any stream or watercourse. Every person, company or corporation conducting such business shall use the best approved methods to prevent the escape of offensive gases or odors and to protect the health and safety of all persons employed in such business.
 
I'm paraphrasing, of course, but here you and your girl can't get a hotel room if your not married. If your a man, you can't go out in public dressed as a woman. If you are a woman, you can't ask a man to buy you a drink in a bar.

Sec. 11-17 Storage, display, etc., of food and drink; dustless cleaning; keeping of live fowl or animals prohibited; elimination of flies, rodents, etc.; sugar containers

'No live animal or fowl shall be kept or allowed in any room in which food is prepared, stored, distributed, sold or served, or in any basement under such room or in any attic above the same, or adjoining room or compartment so ventilated that odors therefore permeate or enter the food establishment.'
