Hi All,

I am trying to figure out if we can use 1/2hr fire partitions to separate hotel rooms from each other and corridors. My code review says it is fine but everyone I talk to says they always just do 1-hr.

Building is fully sprinklered IIB and here are the sections that lead me to a 1/2 hr rating:
  • 2015 IBC:
    • Table 1020.1 allows 1/2hr corridors
    • Section 708.3 allows 1/2hr in sprinklered building
  • 2015 NFPA: 28.3.6.1.3
    • 28.3.6.1.3 allows 1/2hr corridors
    • 28.3.7.2 allows 1/2 guest room separation
Thank you!

Welcome

So just how were you going to make a Listed 1/2 hour wall?

What listing agency and number are you looking at?

Haven't fully thought this one through yet. I was hoping there would be some relief on dampers and running plumbing in it for kitchen walls.

UL U407 provides an assembly for this.

I don't know what benefits the 1/2 hour allowance provides. You still need to protect membrane penetrations, I doubt the 30 min difference would change fire caulk in the annular space for a typical plumbing penetration firestop. Ducts penetrating a corridor wall typically do not require dampers.
We draw corridors as 1hr even when they only need to be 1/2 hour because there is no benefit and it would only confuse people who are not accustomed to seeing 1/2 hr walls on plan.
