that I need look real close at everything they did.

The upturned boat look went away and a gable appeared. I wouldn't let them hack the beam unless an engineer blessed it. Apparently, none would because they covered it with a little tiny dormer. It looks like the mailbox is on the roof. I am still looking for the picture of that.

Can you say? I wish I were a carpenter?

The fix in your first pic could have been so much more eloquent if they'd only carried the new roof pitch, with it's higher ridge, through and built a little gable, perhaps even incorporating a gable roof vent.
