In section 705.8.1 the text states openings permitted in an exterior wall. I have a covered carport with columns supporting a roof that is in the same plane as the R-3 unit that it attaches to. Does the plane with the columns constitute a wall with openings or is it not considered a wall therefore no issues with the percentage of opening calcs. I've attached a plan for reference.

A wall is a structure and/or a surface that defines:
an area; Yes. space under the roof/column
can carry a load; yes, the roof
provides security, Questionable
provides shelter, yes, the roof
soundproofing; Questionable
serves a decorative purpose. Questionable

Thanks for that Mark. A bit gray. Is that a dictionary definition (Webster's?)?

I was reviewing these definitions from the code:
[BF] EXTERIOR WALL. A wall, bearing or nonbearing, that is used as an enclosing wall for a building, other than a fire wall, and that has a slope of 60 degrees (1.05 rad) or greater with the horizontal plane.

[BS] WALL, LOAD-BEARING. Any wall meeting either of the following classifications:
1. Any metal or wood stud wall that supports more than 100 pounds per linear foot (1459 N/m) of vertical load in addition to its own weight.

Thanks for your time Mark.

So then a carport has no walls on the open sides, as it's not enclosing?

Cheers, Wayne

It is a wall with potentially too much opening. It's been my experience that some even require a parapet. It all depends on proximity to the PL.
