Does t716.1(2) overide other sections of code? For example: IBC 713.13.4 requires an opening protective equal to the rating of the shaft that discharges to it. The shaft is 2-hr, so the opening protective would be 2-hr. However, T716.1(2) allows a reduction for openings into the shaft to 90-min. as well as for a reduction of 2-hr fire barriers down to 90-min. T716.1(2) does not provide any reduction specifically for chute discharge rooms. So should 713.13.4 be read to say that the openings should be equal to the openings required for the shaft, or do I take it literally and require a 2-hr opening protective?

I think this is what you are saying, and I agree the language could be better, but 90 min. for a 2hr shaft...The discharge room also gets constructed as a 2hr FB so it falls under the same "exemption"...Make sense?

Absolutely makes sense, just wanted to be sure. I tend to read too much into things looking for perfect language. I kept thinking if it's good enough for a shaft opening it should be good enough for the discharge room.
