ICC-ES Includes Environmental Performance as an “Added Value”

http://www.icc-es.org/News/NR/2011/NR062311-AddedValue.pdf

Increasing demand for sustainable construction is leading more building product manufacturers to

seek independent verification of the sustainable features of their products.

“Green building is shifting from voluntary standards to mandatory codes,” ICC-ES Director of

Environmental Programs Rob Brooks said. “Code officials rely on independent verification of product

attributes to substantiate compliance to the code—whether it’s structural, fire, mechanical, plumbing or

environmental performance. We are seeing report holders add environmental performance to their

existing reports as an added value feature.”

The ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) addresses this need by evaluating the sustainable attributes of

building products to verify compliance eligibility based on the most widely accepted green building

codes, standards, guidelines and green rating systems. During the product evaluation, ICC-ES reviews

the production process to verify it meets specific sustainability targets. Where applicable, the report

includes a matrix of the product’s eligibility with green building codes, standards, guidelines and green

rating systems.

ICC-ES recently issued reports to Angelus Block Company (VAR-1018), Boise Cascade (VAR-

1017), Onduline S.A. (VAR-1016), Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies (AERT) (VAR-

1015) and Orco Block Company (VAR-1014).
