Hello -

  • IEBC 1301.6.11 states "In applying this section, the means of egress are required to conform to the following sections of the International Building Code: 1003.7, 1004, 1005, 1006, 1007, 1016.2, 1026.1, 1028.2, 1028.5, 1029.2, 1029.3, 1029.4 and 1030."
  • The ICC commentary notes: "Before a building can be evaluated in this category, and Chapter 13 in general, it must comply with the listed sections of the IBC."
  • This seems clear enough. But then why does 'Category b' at IEBC 1301.6.11.1 only reference sections 1005 and 1006? Why not just require compliance with all of the above mentioned sections.
  • Similarly, category c is attained with 125% egress capacity and the required number of exits. But it also entails compliance with "the minimum required width dimensions specified in the International Building Code."
Are the width dimensions mentioned at C not required to satisfy category B? Or are they just superfluously mentioned at C?

Thank you for your input -
