International Code Council and EPA Collaborate on Wastewater Management

The International Code Council and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have joined forces in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on improving decentralized wastewater systems. This agreement, signed on December 5, 2023, aims to enhance public health protection by ensuring effective management of these systems.

This MOU extends a long-standing partnership between the two bodies, encompassing technology sharing, training, public education on septic system care, and material development on wastewater management. This collaboration is crucial as one in five U.S. homes depends on private decentralized wastewater systems.

Matt Sigler, Executive Director for Plumbing, Mechanical, and Fuel Gas at the Code Council, emphasized the critical need for this initiative. System failures can lead to drinking water pollution and public health crises, worsened by climate change effects like rising sea levels.

The Code Council spearheads the development of the International Private Sewage Disposal Code® (IPSDC), adopted in 17 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and recognized by federal agencies for disaster mitigation. They are also developing the ICC 825 – a new standard to incorporate advanced technologies and address climate change impacts.
